I didn’t like it Los Angeles At first, I found the place too spacious and didn’t like the atmosphere there. I also felt that there wasn’t much to do compared to a place like Paris, London or Tokyo.
But once I stopped trying to fit Los Angeles into the typical tourist mold and gave the city a chance, I’ve already begun to appreciate the unique charm and laid-back lifestyle of Los Angeles. At that moment I really fell in love with the city, and I think you will too. It’s a city built for people, not tourists.
But if you’re a visitor (like me), you’ll still need a great place to stay. Your choice of hotel can make or break your trip. And since the city is so sprawling, where you stay will have a big impact on what you see and how much time you spend stuck in traffic.
I have stayed at many hotels in Los Angeles over the years. To help you have a memorable time in the City of Angels, here is a list of my favorite hotels in Los Angeles:
1. Kenny
The Kinney Hotel is a vibrant three-star boutique hotel located in Venice Beach. I think it really captures the essence of the city’s laid-back, artistic spirit. I love the fun, youthful feel of the hotel, with its colorful decor, quirky art installations, and vintage-inspired furnishings. There are plenty of amenities here, too, including a heated outdoor pool, a chic lounge area with fire pits, bike rentals, and a fitness center. The hotel’s central courtyard is a social hub (they call it The Quad) and features ping pong tables and a cozy lounge area, perfect for relaxing or mingling with other travelers.
The elegant rooms have a quirky feel too, with wooden furniture and colorful paintings on the walls. The bathrooms, while a little dated, are decent-sized and feature colorful tiles and artwork. They also come with complimentary toiletries and fluffy bathrobes. There is underground parking on site (a rarity in Los Angeles), which is perfect if you’re on a business trip. Southern California Road Trip.
2. Sixty Beverly Hills
This contemporary four-star hotel is located in the heart of iconic Beverly Hills. The Sixty features sleek, modern interiors with mid-century design elements (like geometric shapes, minimalist wood furniture, and wide-open spaces). I especially love the rooftop pool and lounge with panoramic views of the city. There’s also a trendy restaurant and bar on site that serves innovative cuisine and craft cocktails. It’s a bit pricey, but that’s just Los Angeles.
The rooms and suites are spacious and feature elegant hardwood floors, custom furnishings, luxurious bedding, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering stunning views of Beverly Hills or the Los Angeles skyline. Some rooms also have balconies. Amenities include a writing desk, luxury bedding, a flat-screen TV, a Nespresso machine, and a well-stocked minibar. The spacious bathrooms feature marble countertops, rain showers, and luxury bath products. It’s the perfect choice for travelers looking for a stylish stay in one of Los Angeles’ most upscale neighborhoods.
3. Venice Hotel V
This historic building, dating back to 1915, was once home to Charlie Chaplin. It has since been renovated and transformed into a chic three-star hotel that perfectly captures the eclectic, bohemian vibe of Venice Beach. Located just a few steps from the famous Muscle Beach, I really like that they offer helpful beach amenities, such as beach boats as well as umbrellas and chairs for your use.
Each room is uniquely designed in one of three styles: boho, artist, or dog city. I love that all the rooms have stunning ocean views, so you can wake up and stare out into the vast open space. The beds are really comfortable and have soft pillows too. The spacious bathrooms have beautifully tiled showers, Aesop toiletries, and fluffy bathrobes. This is the best place to stay if you want to splurge on a stay in one of the Most popular neighborhoods in Los Angeles.
4. Shutters on the beach
Shutter on the Beach is a five-star luxury hotel with a classic coastal charm reminiscent of a grand beach house. Located right on the sands of Santa Monica, this beachfront hotel has a quaint and elegant vibe, with hand-picked art adorning the walls. I love the fact that they have a range of upscale amenities, including a full-service spa, a beachfront pool and hot tub, and multiple dining options (one of which includes breakfast) serving fresh, locally sourced cuisine.
The hotel features a beach-themed design with spacious, sun-drenched rooms. It features hardwood floors, elegant Tibetan rugs, artwork by local artists, and small in-room libraries. The rooms have all the amenities you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. The comfy bathrobes, slippers, and luxury bath products are truly exquisite. Most rooms offer private balconies with stunning ocean views. It’s the perfect retreat for those who want a relaxing escape.
5. Citizen M Los Angeles
This four-star hotel is the perfect place for the modern traveler looking for comfort, style and luxury without spending a lot of money. I’m a huge fan of the brand (it’s huge in Europe), with its minimalist design and vibrant, art-filled interiors. I also love all the common spaces where you can work or relax, from the cozy living room lobby to the rooftop bar with panoramic views of the city. The breakfast buffet is also really extensive with pastries, healthy options and hot dishes like scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages.
One of citizenM’s concepts is to offer one type of room that is small but thoughtfully designed to optimize space. All rooms have refrigerators, comfortable king-sized beds, soft pillows, blackout curtains and soundproofing so you can get a good night’s sleep. The bathrooms are small but well designed too, with a rain shower and citizenM signature toiletries with an option for “morning” or “evening.” I love that the rooms have wall-to-wall windows that let in plenty of LA sunshine too.
This is a modern, attractive and functional hotel, perfect for travelers who want to stay in downtown Los Angeles close to all the art museums. Don’t miss The Last Bookstore, located just across the street! It’s my favorite bookstore in the city and a must-see for book lovers.
6. Andaz West Hollywood
This five-star Hyatt property is the place to go if you want modern luxury on the famous Sunset Strip. (It was actually the first hotel on the strip!) I love the brand and this location has lots of open, airy spaces that showcase the work of local artists. However, the rooftop pool is the real highlight of the hotel. Be sure to come here to relax on the lounge chairs or take some great panoramic photos. Another nice touch is the complimentary wine between 4pm and 5pm each evening.
Rooms are spacious and elegant, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the Hollywood Hills or the Los Angeles skyline. Each room features minimalist style and amenities like flat-screen TVs, Bluetooth speakers, and a complimentary minibar with snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. The beds are comfortable, and I also appreciate the spacious work desks. The elegant bathrooms feature large rain showers, plush robes, and complimentary designer toiletries.
Located in West Hollywood, the Andaz is a great choice for first-time visitors to the city. (It’s centrally located to most of the places you might want to visit.) And because it’s a Hyatt property, you can book rooms and suites with points (if you want to learn more about the world of points and miles, This post can help you get started.).
