Quebec City It’s beautiful. Although it’s regularly overlooked in favor of larger destinations like Toronto and MontrealThis is where European explorers first arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries. The old city is the cultural center of Quebec (as well as the provincial capital), and is one of the best preserved in North America.
As a foodie and history buff, I love Quebec City. It’s a fun place to visit no matter the season, although I think it’s especially beautiful in the winter when the snow covers its old-world charm.
It’s a popular tourist destination (for Canadians and visitors alike), so there are plenty of hotels to choose from. Some are great and will greatly enhance your experience, while others won’t enhance your experience at all.
To help you make the most of your visit there and choose from the hundreds of hotels that will appear on booking sites, here is my list of the best hotels in Quebec City.
1. Atibi Q Hotel
Opened in 2022, this new 3-star hotel offers excellent value for the location. It has a unique concept of offering very small rooms that are large enough to accommodate a bed that folds out of the wall. The rooms themselves are simple, with light colours and plenty of natural light, plus some wood accents. The bathrooms are also small, but nice and new, with rain shower heads, free toiletries and lovely murals on the shower walls. In-room amenities are minimal (flat-screen TV only) but there is a shared kitchen where you can cook or have coffee, plus a garden and terrace when the weather is nice.
The hotel includes a simple free breakfast (bread, fruits, meats), but you have to prepare it yourself using the shared kitchen. Overall, this is a very efficient hotel and almost hostel-like. I think it’s a great option for budget travelers who want the privacy of a private room and bathroom.
2. Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac
This hotel is one of the most famous landmarks in the city (if not the entire country). Opened in 1893, the luxurious palace is so important, in fact, that you can take it with you to the Hotel guided tours Even if you’re not staying here. If you stay at this five-star hotel, you’ll feel like you’re living in a historic palace. The spacious lobby is absolutely luxurious, with dazzling chandeliers and spiral staircases that give the hotel a classic, luxurious feel.
The rooms here are stylish and airy, although I think they look a little dated thanks to the faded carpets and colour palette. Room amenities include a rain shower, desk and coffee maker. The award-winning palace also features several fine restaurants and bars as well as an indoor pool, hot tub, spa, steam rooms and fitness room. The breakfast, although pricey, is amazing and has plenty of options for all diets.
If you want timeless luxury, stay here.
3. Hotel du Jardin – Baie les Lofts
This three-star hotel is made up of spacious loft apartments, making it a great option for groups or families (or anyone looking for a little more space than a standard hotel room). It’s a bit like staying at an Airbnb, with contactless check-in and passcode entry. The apartments have a minimalist design with light colors and wood accents, plus large grayscale animal prints on the walls. The brightly tiled bathrooms have rain showers with excellent pressure (something I always appreciate), desks, soft beds, coffee makers, and flat-screen TVs.
Although breakfast is not provided, there are plenty of places within walking distance where you can grab a bite to eat (the neighborhood it’s located in, St. Roch, is actually one of the city’s best areas for foodies). Overall, it’s a simple but cozy option for couples or groups who want more space. I think it’s especially ideal if you’re planning a longer stay in the city, as this trendy neighborhood has a more local feel than the old town.
4. Auberge J. Moisan
Travel back to Victorian Quebec at this charming four-star bed and breakfast. The B&B is decorated much as it was when it was first built in the mid-1800s, with floral quilts, colorful wallpaper, and exposed brick and wood. I love that you can enjoy a great continental breakfast (there are fresh croissants!) in the Victorian lounge, relax on the outdoor terrace, or prepare your own meals in the guest kitchen.
The rooms are small and don’t have many amenities (for example, there are no TVs in the rooms, although there is one in the living room with a Roku stick that you can use). The cozy rooms have very comfortable beds, antique lamps and period furnishings, and many have deep soaking tubs in the bathrooms (I find the bathrooms a little small). While they aren’t very spacious, they make up for it in charm and service. This is one of the most unique accommodations in town.
5. Chateau de Tourelles
This lovely 3-star inn is located just a 10-minute walk from the Old Town. The rooms are simply yet elegantly decorated, with plenty of natural light, hardwood floors, colorful walls, and even some exposed brick. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, a desk, and very comfortable beds. Some suites have a private terrace and jacuzzi if you want to relax. Breakfast is not included, but there is a Nespresso machine in each room and coffee/tea is available in the common area 24/7. There are also several dining options within walking distance here.
What I especially like is that there is a shared rooftop terrace where you can relax and enjoy the panoramic views of the city. Another plus is that you can reserve a parking space if you have a vehicle. This is another place where check-in is done digitally, which is convenient if you arrive at an odd hour.
